I used to attend the occasional networking event, back in the BC (BeforeCovid) days and as a sole trader I was told by all sorts of well meaning people that I should work on my elevator pitch.
Well, I never really did. Because I never really believed in it.
If you just have a minute or so, to make a first impression by trying to explain who you are, what you’ve done and what you’re going to do for the person you’re talking to, well...
I don’t think it works all that well.
I much prefer the elevator question.
Begin a conversation by talking about the person you’re hoping to connect with. If you know who they are and what they want, it’s a lot more likely you can figure out if they need the products or services you provide.
If it is a match, blow your trumpet! Don’t be shy to explain what’s on offer.
And if it is not, well, at least you didn’t waste anyone’s time...
